Swachh Bharat Mission

Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand state and also the district headquarters. Out of the 6 municipal corporations in the state, it is the most populated corporation. Mussoorie, Haridwar and Rishikesh are the main urban centres located at a distance of 30-50 km from here.

Objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission

1. Elimination of open defecation
2. Elimination of manual scavenging
3. Modern and scientific solid waste management
4. Awareness about cleanliness along with public health
5. Capacity development for municipal bodies
6. Creating a favorable environment for participation of private labor.

• To fulfill the above objectives, the first objective of eliminating open defecation, the Municipal Corporation, Dehradun is working on the following plan: Individual household toilets, conversion of unhygienic toilets into flush/water flow toilets / two pit system / septic tank-soak pit / connection to sewer line. Arrangement of community and public toilets, mobile toilets. For this purpose, out of 2554 applications received for construction of individual household toilets, 1547 applications have been verified and first/second installment has been released to all beneficiaries. Presently, all 60 wards of Municipal Corporation, Dehradun have been declared ODF.
• Under the Urban Solid Waste Management Scheme of the Municipal Corporation, Dehradun, a processing plant is being prepared for approximately 500 metric tons of waste at Village – Shishambara, Pargana – Pachhwadoon, Tehsil – Vikasnagar, Dehradun, under which there is also a proposal to generate 10 megawatt electricity from waste in the near future. The processing plant under construction at Shishambara by Municipal Corporation, Dehradun is the country’s first covered plant. With the operation of the plant at Shishambara, an action plan has been prepared to eliminate the waste disposal problems of nearby other urban bodies and municipal councils of Dehradun district.
• From time to time, special cleanliness campaigns are conducted to make people aware about cleanliness.
• Under Swachh Bharat Mission, underground dustbins have been installed at the municipal level by Dehradun Municipal Corporation. Initiatives have been taken for waste segregation and disposal at source and an action plan has been prepared for disposal of organic waste through composting.
• For beautification of parks located within the municipal area and proper disposal of waste, windrow composting units have been installed for composting.
